Excavating the human sciences with André Leroi-Gourhan. Archaeological and anthropological investigations

Talk abstract

The French ethnologist and prehistorian André Leroi-Gourhan (1911-1986) was a towering figure of the 20th century social sciences, yet the very wide range and diversity of his contributions have sometimes hindered their appreciation. Beginning with studies of Chinese and Japanese civilisations, Leroi-Gourhan went on to contribute to museological and ethnological research (at the Musée de l’homme) before turning from the 1950s on to prehistoric archaeology and human evolution. Drawing on original archival materials, I propose in this talk to highlight some of the interdisciplinary connections woven by Leroi-Gourhan, involving ethnology, history and psychology, and then examine their implications for contemporary archaeology, technology and material culture studies.
