The European Research Centre for Chinese Studies (ERCCS) in Beijing was established in 2017. It was based on a collaboration between the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), which has operated an office in Beijing since 1997, and Germany’s Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (MWS). The Institute for the History of Natural Sciences (IHNS) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was the main local partner. The goal of the centre was to help build contacts and collaborations within Chinese, French and German humanities and social sciences, conduct basic research and organize conferences and lectures. The cooperation expired at the end of 2024 and the ERCCS was closed.
Since 2025, the EFEO has resumed its activities in China: in Beijing, through the creation of a “Plateforme académique franco-chinoise sur le dialogue des civilisations et les études chinoises”, hosted at the Jingshi Academy of Beijing Normal University; and in Shanghai, through the establishment of a new EFEO Center hosted at Fudan University.
